Rathgael Gymnastics Club has emerged as Northern Ireland Club of the Year at the sports governing bodies recent conference and awards night.

The event organised by British gymnastics and hosted last weekend, proved to be major success for the club who also brought home awards for volunteer of the year, acrobatic gymnast of the year and rhythmic gymnast of the year.

Speaking after the event club chairman Andy McDowell said “This award serves to endorse the efforts of so many at Rathgael and I am extremely proud to be able to say that this club no longer lives in the shadow of others, rather we are officially leading from the front. The challenge now exists for us to maintain and indeed enhance the standard at which we operate and the board and coaching team are very excited by what the future holds for this club. The dedication and commitment of management and coaching team at the club is second to none and the Club of the Year award should be regarded as a fitting tribute to them.â€

The awards for acrobatic gymnast of the year award went to Tegan Maitland and her partner Bryana Spence, rhythmic gymnast of the year was won by Eden McAllister, volunteer of the year award was shared by Andy McDowell and Peter Lockhart and Mr Ray Philips deservedly received an Honorary Award in recognition of his many years of highly valued service to the sport in Northern Ireland.
